If you want to start making impressions on people and put your name out there, you have to get your music into the right hands. Ideally, you’d want personal connections you might have made through networking, but more often than not, you’ll find yourself emailing people cold in the hopes that they’ll actually read past the subject line.

Here are some tips on how to write the perfect pitch email to get your music heard!

Start with an introduction. Go for something simple, like “Hi! I’m ____, the lead singer of ____. We’re a (country-pop duo, rock group, etc.), influenced by acts like ____ and ____.” Including artists that are similar to your sound helps the person you’re emailing understand what you’re doing musically and if you’ll be a good fit with whatever they’re doing.

After the intro, explain how you found the person you’re emailing. It would also help to toss in a compliment for something specific that they’ve done. It shows that you’ve done your research and aren’t just doing an email blast for every person in the industry you can think of.

Now for the important part: what you’re asking of them. Do you have a new single out that you’re trying to place on a playlist? Are you looking for an interview to promote your latest project? Keep it short and simple, and just ask. A vague request won’t get you anywhere fast. If the answer is no, make it clear that you’d like any constructive criticism they have to offer. Any response is better than nothing!

It’s also a good idea to include links to whatever it is you’re asking them to check out, your website and your press kit. It makes it easier for the person you’re reaching out to to find your stuff, and it also ensures that they’ll have all the relevant information about you and your music.

Lastly, say thank you. This person took time out of their day to read your pitch and listen to your music. Showing appreciation for that will let them know you’re a professional.

If you follow these steps, you’ll have a professional-sounding pitch email that will show people you’re serious about your career. It can feel uncomfortable emailing someone you don’t know out of the blue with a request, but don’t let that keep you from trying! It’s important to reach out to people as you promote your music, even if you don’t know them. You never know who’ll take a chance on you!
