Promotional tactics are always changing, from billboards to Instagram posts, but one that has been on everybody’s radar for the past few years is the playlist. Streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music have created extremely popular playlists that update regularly, covering everything from specific genres to new releases.

Getting your track on one of these playlists is an amazing opportunity; thousands of people listen to these playlists, usually for the express purpose of finding new artists and songs. One track on a playlist with lots of listeners can take your career to the next level. But how do you get a spot on just the right playlist?

First of all, it’s important to not be picky about which playlist you want to get on. Sure, everyone wants to get a placement on one of the big Spotify playlists, but there are also smaller outlets that curate playlists for their audience. Try to build your way up to the big time by getting your song on playlists for music blogs or radio stations. You can grow your fanbase organically, which will help you out when you eventually try to get the attention of the curators of larger playlists.

Another tactic to use if you can’t get onto any playlists? Make your own! Many artists have their own playlists on different streaming services, which is a great way to connect with your existing fans. You can also connect with other artists by adding their music to your playlist. If they share your playlist to their fans, you can gain more listeners!

If you decide you’re ready to attempt to get on a larger playlist, there are a couple steps you need to make sure to take. Firstly, get your profile verified. Most playlist curators will be more likely to add you to their list if you’re a verified artist.

Secondly, figure out who is running the playlist you’ve got your eye on. It might be an industry insider, an influencer or the platform itself. Get an email address or, if you’re trying to deal directly with the streaming service, find the contact info for the platform’s artist liaison. Keep your email brief and to-the-point, with clear links to your music. Make sure to follow up as well! It can be easy to get buried in the avalanche of new music that comes out every day, so a quick follow-up email to ensure that your track was heard is never a bad idea.

A playlist placement won’t make or break your career, but it can be a great way to reach new fans and to gain a little street cred. Don’t be afraid to reach out to the people who run your favorite playlists and ask if they’d consider your music; you might be surprised at who will say yes!
